Hi Everyone,

Happy fall. I hope you’re all doing well. I come to you with news and a glimpse of the wettest surface in my studio. How are you?

There are so many ways to learn painting : art school, a semester-long class, an intensive workshop, studying with another artist, or spending years working things out alone in a studio. I’ve been the practitioner and the instructor in all of them.

Over the years, I’ve taught painting in many of these formats—from semester-long courses and visiting artist lectures to the online educational world I fell into at the cusp of the pandemic, where I still teach today.

This fall I’m trying something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

On October 24–25, I’ll be teaching The New Oil Painting: Weekend Edition at Burnt Sienna Art School in Berlin.

It’s a new kind of workshop for me: an intensive two days of painting together in person in Berlin at the Burnt Sienna Art School, followed by two online studio meetings in the months afterward.

I designed it this way because I love immersion learning (and teaching), I love travel; my eyes are always hungry for the new and the exotic. But I also know how difficult it can be to leave your life for an entire week or longer to pursue a passion.

So that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

We’ll spend the weekend immersed in the ideas and methods behind The New Oil Painting—including solvent-free painting, simplifying materials and process, zero-waste practices, and developing greater freedom and fluency in the studio. We’ll start three paintings at once, dissect different painting architectures and, of course, paint without solvents.

Then you’ll take the work home, live with it, continue painting—and we’ll reconvene for two more sessions monthly online to see what happened.

And because I’m a foodie, we’ll have to eat great dinners. There will also be a reception on Friday evening before we begin.
